Jean Brun fut professeur de philosophie à Dijon de 1961 à 1986, après être passé à Nîmes, Bordeaux et Londres. Il fut grand spécialiste de la philosophie grecque, contribuant à de nombreux dans ce domaine. Il fut aussi l'un des grands spécialistes français de Kierkegaard. Philosophe et apologie, Jean Brun a publié une trentaine d'ouvrages.
